Meridian
Stretching
The
Meridian Stretching system incorporates sixteen different types
of stretches, each one uniquely defined by bone rotational interrelationships
and specific muscle groups. Each type of stretch provides the
best leverage to stretch individual or synergistic groups of muscles.
Each type of stretch also creates concomitant and predictable
physiological and psychological improvements in a person. This
system embodies a balanced approach to physical and mental fitness.
It is a predictable, non-invasive, preventative health program
with resulting gains in physical strength and functioning, psychological
fitness, and spiritual and emotional development.
The
Meridian Stretching system combines resistance stretching influenced
by yoga technique for a demanding workout that increases both
strength and flexibility. Resistance stretching involves forcefully
working muscles in a stretching position while simultaneously
contracting the muscles. This stretching system works similar
to acupuncture and acts as a missing link between exercise science
and alternative medicine. The basic principle is that muscles
stretch best if you contract them, while stretching them at the
same time. This active muscle contraction is called resistance,
and it is the foundation of this technique.

Matthies
Janet
is a Meridian Flexibility Intern and a Certified West Coast Pilates
instructor who has been practicing since 2003 in the greater Boston
area. Her Pilates teaching experience has been with one-on-one
and small group training in mat Pilates, reformer, Cadillac, spine
corrector, ladder barrel, wunda chair, and magic circle in a private
studio setting. After meeting a Pilates student/friend who practiced
massage therapy Janet was introduced to Bob Cooley the founder
of the Meridian Flexibility system. Janet immediately enrolled
in the certification program for Meridian Flexibility and completed
the year long program in November of 2006. Janet's inspiration
to learn about flexibility was to protect and develop young athletes
who train in intense athletic programs. With three teenage daughters
participating in Gymnastics, soccer and cheerleading there was
a lot to work with! Along with increasing strength and protecting
from injury the Meridian System also improves mental, spiritual
and emotional health. For example stretching out the quad muscles
can improve public speaking ability as the stomach Meridian is
the center for public speaking, try it out the next time you need
to present in front of a crowd!!! "Balance can be achieved by
stretching balancing muscle groups to make the body lighter than
you can ever imagine in your sport of choice, ask my gymnast daughter!"
Meridian Flexiblity has changed the way I teach and learn about
my students, it's the most amazing method of fitness training
that exists today!!!
